How is Wheat Straw Eco-Friendly?
Made from entirely biodegradable plastic, that takes 3 to 6 months to fully compost. The bio plastic range is completely natural, sustainable and renewable. Capable of being decomposed and used as fertiliser or melted back into pulp to create different products again and again.
Requiring less energy and toxins to produce, realising less CO2 emissions, and made from agricultural waste the production of wheat straw plastic is kinder to the environment than regular plastic.
By using agricultural waste, wheat straw eliminates the need to chop down forests for materials and reduces the need to dispose of the wheat straw bio product – which would be traditionally burned, contributing to air pollution. Additionally wheat straw plastic is profitable for farmers, enabling them to sell their waste products at a reasonable price.
How is Wheat Straw Plastic Made?
Wheat is a type of grain that’s most often used to make bread, flour or wheat-gluten. Wheat straw is what’s leftover once the wheat is harvested and using it in plastic production is an ideal zero-waste option.
The plastic is created by breaking down the cellulose the wheat straw contains. This process creates the opportunity to make different kinds of polymers. Polymers are large bonds formed by loose monomers that are strong and are used as building blocks to create a substance. Natural polymers are also found in our bodies, like our nails and hair.
Traditional plastic is made from artificial polymers, but the polymers created from wheat straw are completely natural.
